Dreamstime - is one of the agencies we use ourselves and many of the images on this site have come from them. They offer a wide range of content, have a very fast site search and a large range of completely free images.
We have been using them since 2005, for various online projects, and found them to be an excellent source. Like many of these services, you buy licensed, royalty-free images, using 'credits' which you purchase online and use to 'pay' for images.
Photos 'cost' different 'credits' depending on size and popularity. A new image, just placed on the site, can often be purchased for one credit. As they become more popular, they increase in value and you will need to use more credits to obtain them. Generally, the smaller-size images, which are useful for websites or digital placement, are 'cheaper'. If you need a high-resolution image for print use, expect to pay more.
The more credits you buy, the cheaper the images. You could, with the smallest credit package, buy an image for around £0.95.
You can use and adapt the licensed images on websites, presentations and printing. Just check the license for how many.
What is great about Dreamstime is that they also offer completely free images and allow you to print up to 10,000 copies, with unlimited use on websites. For purchased images, there is a limit of 500,000 copies. More than enough, we would have thought!
We love them - just make sure you use your credits before they expire - we forgot one time so didn't make the best use of our credit package.
If you work with photography, you can use Dreamstime as an agent to sell your work. Open a free account with them, upload your own images (which are quality-checked) and they will sell them for you, giving you a cut of the fee they charge clients. One way to make your images generate an income - the sites do all the work for you and you get paid!
